Character: Zelos Wilder
Age: 22 (hah)
Canon: Tales of Symphonia
Canon Point: Tne night at Flanoir, right before he goes to Lloyd's room
Background: Touch me, hunny~
Personality:
Zelos Wilder is a complicated and difficult person. His personality has been crafted, manipulated, and intentionally organized since he was a young child. To explain the specific traits and attributes that Zelos possesses, it is important to recognize the layers that envelops Zelos' personality as a whole.
Zelos, as he appears, is a happy and cheerful guy that hits on every female he sees. He is quite a charmer when it comes to the ladies, winning their attention very easily. He even had his own little fan club that followed him around Meltokio, getting a lot of gifts in the process. When the party first meets Zelos, his 'Personal' option on his exsphere is already equipped and ready. This allows the player to receive various items whenever Zelos talks to a female when he is selected as the moving choice.
It is known throughout Tethe'alla, as well as canon, that Zelos is very good looking. While this is a good quality to have, Zelos, however, is fully aware of this fact. His ego is off the charts and is even noted to be a 'walking libido'. As long as a female is involved, Zelos will be flirting and using his appearance and charm to woo her. Because of his looks, Zelos has a superiority complex in which he thinks he is better than everyone else. He even gave himself the name of 'The Great Zelos Wilder'. This name is used throughout the first game and even the second one.
Zelos likes to give people nicknames whether or not they're good or bad. For example, Lloyd is ‘bud’, Genis is ‘brat’, and Sheena is ‘violent demonic banshee’. He has received both positive and negative feedback about this. For example, Sheena will smack him around when Zelos refers her as anything but her name. He also calls Lloyd by his nickname so much that even his butler calls him 'Sir Bud' out of politeness and, of course, Zelos' insistence.
Layer 2: The Idiot Chosen
Zelos is called ‘Idiot Chosen’ for a reason. Because of his carefree attitude, most of the things he says and does are pretty idiotic. He says the wrong things at the wrong time, or he’ll even just say something completely irrelevant to the conversation. Zelos knows many metaphors and analogies so it wouldn’t be rare if he said something inappropriate to what’s said around him. Compared to Colette, who is more of the ideal Chosen, Zelos is the complete opposite due to his attitude towards others and his lack of care for most things. He shuts himself out from the rest of the world because he sees no use in trying to change anything because it’s meaningless.
He is, in fact, a drama queen. What’s that you hear? Oh, that’s just Zelos whining and complaining about every little thing. He’s also a brat that was raised in a wealthy family that was able to give him anything he wanted. Old habits never die, do they? Zelos is also known for his constant pranks and jokes on the other members in the party, especially the naïve ones in the group like Lloyd, Genis, and Colette. He’ll think all kinds of spooky stories or twist their words in the most wrong way possible.
Layer 3: The Manipulative, Mysterious yet Intelligent Liar
At this point, it is extremely important to note that not only did Zelos betray the main party, but he was manipulating three different groups without any of them knowing of his possible betrayal. With that said, it is very easy to be confused by Zelos' antics. You never know what he’s thinking or how he really feels because he could have an ulterior motive. He says one thing but could mean another. It took Lloyd awhile to fully trust Zelos, or depending on what route the player takes in the game, he doesn't trust Zelos at all.
Zelos is also not as stupid and idiotic as he appears. Zelos graduated at the top of his class with the assumption of his hunnies shouting attendance for him as well as doing his homework. Is this assumption true? Could be, but we will never know. He exceeded in mathematics and is a genius when it comes to numbers. He has been able to prove even Genis wrong in his studies. Raine also lets Zelos be the official math tutor of Lloyd, Genis, and Colette.
Truth be told, Zelos' real and true intelligence does not exemplify how he portrays himself publicly. He is much too smart to really be the stupid, perverted, and idiotic Chosen that he appears to be. Zelos is highly observant and can easily pick things up about people. He has the brain of a detective, you see. He's no Sherlock but he'll be able to know a person's temperament and what makes them tic. Basically any information that will be useful to him in the long run, he doesn't care about anything else. He grew up in Meltokio, which chaste system he despises taught him to realize that all people are selfish and fake. Zelos does not believe that a person can provide good to the world without having some sort of personal and selfish thing to gain from it. The only person that has been an exception to this is Colette Brunel.
Zelos isn’t a compulsive liar but he does lie quite often. No one will ever know who he really is deep down because Zelos will not give away any truthful information about him to anyone, even to people that he may start to trust. He likes to play games with people because he likes to have some sort of enjoyment in this pitiful life of his. He fibs about who he is, what he does, and what he likes to put on a show for people.
Zelos has this defense mechanism so he wouldn’t get hurt and that he won’t get attached to people that could hurt him. Ever since he was little he’s learned to not trust anyone because no one was worthy of his trust. He has lived twenty two years of life without anyone loving and needing him. No one has asked or cared about what he thinks or feels about anything. Zelos' emotions are very hard to read. As happy go lucky as he appears to be, he really does not care about anything. He does not care about his own life, that people are being killed to revive the Goddess Martel, and if someone where to give him lip about his views about things, he wouldn't care about that either. Zelos taught himself at a very young age to keep his emotions at bay in order to create a personality that he himself does not actually have. He does not care about the women that he flirts with and he certainly does not care about what others think of him, positive or not.
Layer 4: The Self loather
At last, the core of the Great Zelos Wilder and the very reason why he is the way he is. Zelos has had issues with self loathing since he was a child. Because his mother neglected him, he always thought that he was at fault for it, not to mention his experience of watching her bleeding to death for that matter. Seles had also been stuck in an abbey for the rest of her life so Zelos thought he was the reason for screwing everything up for everyone. He is, in fact, a narcissist but hates himself with every bone in his body. Zelos is fully aware that had his mother not been standing where she stood, he would not have lived to this day. It actually pains him that he did not die in her place. His very life has caused other's suffering and it has never sat well with him. He is only used as his status as Chosen to please others. No one has actually cared for anything that he might want or has given the effort to get to know him. No one has ever said truly genuine words to him. Because of that, he does not see people for who they are but as tools for him to play around with to get what he wants. He's a manipulator, a liar, and a treacherous phony.
Zelos is a passionate artist. He has spent every day of his life carving this mask and uses it as full body armor, specifically made to be flawless and unbreakable. Why? To protect himself. He has been used, pushed around, accused of being a traitor of Tethe'alla, and a victim of attempted murder by the very knights of the kingdom in which he is second line to the throne for. Zelos believes that there is no good in the world. There is no hope for the world because everyone who lives is selfish. He would rather the world be destroyed than saved because there is nothing to fix the corruption of people. Discrimination will never end and people will always suffer. He has not seen any hope, any good in the world so he will not believe there ever will be.
Zelos trusts no one. He cannot and will not show his true colors to anyone. He is always in control. If anyone where to notice his mask or see through it, Zelos will defend himself and act in such a way that will make them believe that he is nothing but the Idiot Chosen he appears to be. No one can ever know. However, Zelos hides himself skillfully but not entirely. He has left enough to initiate a curiosity that the members of the party have questioned him about only to be dismissed due to some sort of half assed reason, making them shake their heads at any hope that he could be more decent.
Deep down, underneath all these layers of idiocy, jackass, and whining, Zelos is a crying child. One should never judge a book by its cover because Zelos is the exact proof of that. He had no childhood, no person to confide in, no way of showing that he’s sorry that someone like him was born in this world. Zelos began to look at the glass half empty, hating every person that comes into contact with him.
Because Zelos is in a new place, surrounded by new people and a completely different government system, Zelos does not need to make it completely appoint to be fake. There is no reason for him to be on constant guard for. However, this does not mean that he will be his true self. He will still act idiotic, narcissistic, bratty, and whiny but it will not be so over the top because these new people have no idea who he is, what his status is, and where he came from. To him, this is perfect.
However, in regards to the setting of Empatheias, Zelos will basically be wearing his emotions on his sleeve and that's not something he's used to. As far as his emotions and how he feels about things go he's been known to either portray the opposite of how he feels or be seen as ambiguous all together. Zelos has been a closed book his whole life, he'll be showing what he has been working so hard to conceal. This is going to cause him to withdraw even more and try to have as much control of the situation as possible. With people he doesn't know, he has a little more of a leeway but with people he does know from his world he'll be inclined to withdraw more. Zelos is a coward to the point that he would rather run away from his problems than face it up front.
Abilities: Zelos is a little bit of a jack of all trades in terms of fighting style. He's described as a "Magic Swordsman", meaning he is able to use a sword and magic. He is skilled in hand to hand combat as well as sword fighting. He mostly uses his sword for close range attacks and magic for long distance. Because he was given elven blood as a child, he is able to use certain magic.
With hand to hand combat, Zelos is pretty swift with his movements. When he fights, his movements have more grace than brute force to it so he almost looks like he's dancing. Zelos likes to taunt his enemy and will often try to boost his own ego while he fights so people may develop an utter annoyance with him. As Lloyd stated in-game, Zelos comes off as the type of person that would just not die and he indeed does and it makes it even more annoying.
