Personality:
Layer 1: The Womanizing and perverted trickster
Zelos, as he appears, is a happy and cheerful guy that hits on every woman he sees. He is quite a charmer when it comes to the ladies, winning their attention very easily. He even had his own little fan club that followed him around Meltokio, getting a lot of gifts in the process. Zelos likes to give people nicknames whether or not they're good or bad. For example, Lloyd is ‘bud’, Genis is ‘brat’, and Sheena is ‘violent demonic banshee’. Sometimes this doesn’t end very well with some people, mostly Sheena and Genis.
Zelos is called ‘Idiot Chosen’ for a reason. Because of his carefree attitude, most of the things he says and does are pretty idiotic, especially to Sheena. He says the wrong things at the wrong time, or he’ll even just say something completely irrelevant to the conversation. Zelos knows many metaphors and analogies so it wouldn’t be rare if he said something inappropriate to what’s said around him. Compared to Colette, who is more of the ideal Chosen, Zelos is the complete opposite due to his attitude towards others and his lack of care for most things. He shuts himself out from the rest of the world because he sees no use in trying to change anything because it’s meaningless.
He is, in fact, a drama queen. What’s that you hear? Oh, that’s just Zelos whining and complaining about every little thing. He’s also a brat that was raised in a wealthy family that was able to give him anything he wanted. Old habits never die, do they? Zelos was also known for pranking the other members in the party, especially the naïve ones in the group like Lloyd, Genis, and Colette. He’ll think all kinds of spooky stories or twist their words in the most wrong way possible.
Layer 2: The Mysterious yet intelligent liar
It’s easy to be confused by Zelos’ antics. You never know what he’s thinking or how he really feels because he could have an alternative e motive. He says one thing but could mean another. It took Lloyd awhile to fully trust Zelos. He’s also not as stupid and idiotic as he appears. Zelos graduated at the top of his class with the assumption of his hunnies shouting attendance for him as well as doing his homework. Is this assumption true? Could be, but we will never know.
Zelos isn’t a compulsive liar but he does lie quite often. No one will ever know everything about him because Zelos will not give away any truthful information about him to anyone, even to people that he may start to trust. He likes to play games with people because he likes to have some sort of enjoyment in this pitiful life of his. He fibs about some things people may wonder about him so he never tells the truth. Zelos also loves to read people. He has no mind reading powers but he can take a good guess at what kind of person you are and what can make you tic. That’s what makes him unique.
Zelos has this defense mechanism so he wouldn’t get hurt and that he won’t get attached to people that could hurt him. Ever since he was little he’s learned to not trust anyone because no one was worthy of his trust. It’s best to not get into anything serious and just go with the flow. Zelos isn’t stupid; he’s very intelligent, actually. He knows how to play his cards to get what he wants, even if he has to step on a few people to do it.
Layer 3: The Self loather
Zelos has had issues with self loathing since he was a child. Because his mother neglected him, he always thought that he was at fault for it, not to mention his experience of watching her bleeding to death for that matter. Seles had also been stuck in an abbey for the rest of her life so Zelos thought he was the reason for screwing everything up for everyone. He may come off as a narcissist but he loathes himself like no other. Zelos thinks he’s the worst person in the world and that he’s not worth anything at all. That’s why he plays with so many women and why he is so mysterious. He doesn’t care about anyone, not even himself. He should never have been born, after all, or so his mother said.
Deep down, underneath all these layers of idiocy, jackass, and whining, Zelos is a crying child. One should never judge a book by its cover because Zelos is the exact proof of that. He had no childhood, no person to confide in, no way of showing that he’s sorry that someone like him was born in this world. Zelos began to look at the glass half empty, hating every person that comes into contact with him.
----
From the point Zelos is taken from, he’s learned to appreciate things in life a little more as well as looking on the brighter side of things. Thanks to Lloyd, Zelos has become much more loyal and appreciative towards his friends. His betrayal made him realize that it wasn’t his time to die just yet. Lloyd showed him a different side to things, something he’s never taken thought to before. He used to think that kind of thinking was stupid and meaningless but now he’s come to realize that it’s really not. It’s worth a try. Zelos doesn’t have anything to lose.
Now that he’s helped with the defeat of Cruxis, Zelos started to try to make some big changes within the church and how things run. He hopes for a better future for Sylvarant, Tethe’alla, and the people that live in both parts of their new world they all worked hard to unite. Zelos still holds a higher power and he’s going to use that to his advantage to make things better instead of using it for selfish reasons. He hated the madness that happened to him and Colette so he will do anything in his power to finally put a stop to it. Zelos has a lot of love to give. He just… doesn’t know how to show it.
Zelos knows that change is going to come. From the people that he says are his friends and what he believes in now, he’s more than sure it’s going to come sooner than later. His mouth is still louder than you can ever imagine and he does, in fact, say the stupidest things sometimes. Hey, it’s funny! Some people will see the jackass part of Zelos, some will see the funnier and friendlier part of him, some may even see what he has to offer, and some may not see any of that. Whatever will be, will be.
Strengths: (Physical, mental and emotional; PLEASE PROVIDE CANON EXAMPLES)
Physical: Zelos is a magic swordsman. He has healing spells along with others. He mostly uses close range attacks but he knows long range attacks and spells. Zelos reveals that he was given elven blood when he was an infant, giving him the ability to use certain magic. His magic isn't as powerful as Genis' but he's got a few nasty spells up his sleeve, along with a few angel spells.
His weapon of choice is a dagger or a smaller blade, really. His fighting style is quick and it almost looks as if he's dancing. If one chooses to fight him, they may feel a little annoyed while doing so because Zelos is rather quick. Yes, he is annoying and he knows it so he's gonna use that to kick your ass.
Zelos is also an exphere user so his special abilities are boosted to its maximum potential. He's quicker and strength and defense are stronger than the average person.
His artes can be found here and his Ex-skills can be found here.
Mental: This guy has learned, through a very tough life, to not give a shit. Zelos has gone through hell and back, seeing things that no person should ever see. To seeing his mother being murdered right in front of his eyes all the way into wanting to kill himself at the very end.
With all of that said, Zelos knows how to hide what’s bothering him pretty easily. He’s done it since he was very little so it’s turned into quite a habit. How does he do this, you say? By being a complete asshole/jerk, that’s how. Zelos grew up to be who he is by hiding everything he could and move on like nothing happened. It’s hard but it‘s what works for him. Because of Lloyd, he’s grown to be a little more flexible with himself but even so, sometimes things never change
Emotional: As stated earlier, Zelos hides his emotions pretty well if something’s bothering him but he counteracts that by doing something stupid or obnoxious. This is pretty much his normal face most of the time. He’s a loudmouth so it wouldn’t be rare for all of Luceti to hear Zelos mope and complain, or even when he’s in a good mood. That’s just how Zelos is. If he’s not in the mood, he shows the exact opposite. He didn't tell Lloyd his life story until the very end, and he really had to push himself to that too. He wasn't sure if he could trust Lloyd with something like that, but he ended up doing it and it turned out for the better.
Weaknesses:
Physical: As stated earlier, Zelos can be an annoying opponent so it wouldn’t be hard for the other fighter to be really irritated and act in rage at him. He moves rather swiftly so he’s hard to catch, like that fly that’s just too fast. However, you end up catching it, don’t you? He’s not invincible, he’s just annoying.
He's also a slap waiting to happen. Sheena beats the crap out of him every chance he gets so women are one of his big weaknesses when it comes to his mouth and puttin' the moves on a lady.
Mental/Emotional: For someone who has a lot of issues, he’s easily annoyed with a lot of things so it doesn’t take a lot for him to be irritated with something. He’s a bit of a whiner, you see. He’s also a sucker for anyone to say they trust him or they want to get close with him for whatever reason. If he sees that they’re a good person, he’ll hesitate on getting to know them because he wouldn’t want to taint they’re good side with someone like him. Although, he’s learned quite a few lessons from his timeline point, all wounds haven’t been healed just yet.
Zelos will always hate winter. The slightest bit of snow will have him remember things he really won’t want to. White will turn to red in his eyes and will be instantly reminded of his mother and Seles. He sometimes hears her last words in his ears every once in awhile.
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person:
Ugh.
[There’s about a five minute pause for the journal zooms in on a passed out redhead by where the lake meets land, half of his body in the water.]
My head… [His eyes open slightly as he sits up slowly, holding his head up straight. His vision comes clearer to him now, blurry at first, but the only thing he’ll see are shades of green… then blue.
He tries to get up but there’s a sharp pain in his back.]
Ow! What the-- [It’s his first time with these new wings, or so he thinks. He feels a slight bit of weight on his back and reaches for what could possibly be causing the problem. Once he does, he feels something… feathery.] The hell is this! [And then he realized he was in water.]
Great. Just great. I pass out in some random lake and get my clothes soaking wet. [With an aggravated groan, he gets up and stumbles a little but manages to stand up straight up in the end. It was literally a second later that he realized something.]
Wait a second. [That’s when Zelos completely saw where he actually was. It wasn’t rare that Zelos woke up in a weird place but at least it was familiar. This didn’t even look like anywhere in Sylvarant.] Where the hell am I? And why is it so cold? [He shivers and notices that his shirt is missing, along with the rest of his clothes. Well, he’s wearing white pants but he’s pretty sure they aren’t his.]
Okay, unless I just decided to get half naked and pass out in a lake I’m pretty sure this is news to me. Where the hell are my clothes! [He doesn’t mind getting half naked, mind you, however, his whereabouts are his main concern. All Zelos can see are trees, trees, and some more trees. Putting his hands in a funnel shape by his mouth, he yells.]
Hey! [No answer. Let’s try again.] HEY!
[NOPE, still no answer. Zelos gets irritated now. How the hell can NO ONE hear his beautiful voice? He growls, his fists clenched in anger.]
DAMMIT SOMEBODY ANSWER ME!! [All sorts of birds flew from their comfortable nests in trees to run away from the loud, obnoxious noise.]
Helloooooo! Isn’t anyone gonna help meee? Sure, let’s all let the pretty boy be stranded in the middle of fuckin’ nowhere! And why the hell do I have these stupid wings on my back!
Third Person:
There were a lot of reasons why Zelos hated winter. One, the most traumatizing part in his life happened at this time of the year when he was a child. Two, he hated cold weather. He wished it would just be warm all year round. And three…
”ACHOO!”
Zelos sniffled as he walked through the village. He hasn’t even been in Luceti for that long and he’s already getting sick from the weather. The kitchen just had to run out of food when it started to snow. Just his luck. However, Zelos came prepared and wore a jacket and a scarf to fend the cold off from his warm body. With a big bag of groceries in his arms, Zelos walked back to his place as the sky was getting darker.
His eyes drifted from the ground to the sky and watched the snowflakes fall. It was like they were dancing with the light cold breeze, like how nobles used to dance in Meltokio every time they held those fancy balls. For a second, white turned red and the sky went from light gray to black. Even though Zelos moved every time winter came around, he was used to the flashbacks in his head. It didn’t make it any easier for him but it wasn’t a surprise to him anyhow. Sometimes he still hears her last words in a whisper during this time, or even in his sleep.
“You should never have been born.”
Zelos let out a huff of breath as he was reaching his house. “Maybe, maybe not.” He said as he was taking out his keys from his pocket, not speaking to anyone in particular. Once he opened his door, he heard her voice whisper to him again.
“You should never have been born.”
By this time, a smirk formed on Zelos’ lips as he entered his home, taking off his shoes and jacket by the front door. “I’m back, hunny! ♥” His voice echoed into the kitchen, no voice answered back. Zelos waltzed into the kitchen, staring at a big bottle of a new favorite wine he found in one of the stores around here. He opened the slender bottle and took a glass out and poured the contents into the glass. Zelos smelled the wine from the glass and let out a very satisfied sigh in contentment as he walked over to his fireplace and had seat right by it.
“Guess winter’s not so bad,” he sipped some of his wine and smiled. “Is it, mother?”
Strengths:
Physical: Zelos is a magic swordsman. He has healing spells along with others. He mostly uses close range attacks but he knows long range attacks and spells. Zelos reveals that he was given elven blood when he was an infant, giving him the ability to use certain magic.
His weapon of choice is a dagger or a smaller blade. His fighting style is quick and almost looks like he's dancing. If one chooses to fight him, they may feel a little annoyed while doing so because Zelos is rather quick. Yes, he is annoying and he knows it so he's gonna use that to kick your ass. I think a great example of his fighting style is this this video.
Zelos is an exsphere user like the others from Tales of Symphonia. This power enhancer gives him abilities a normal human wouldn’t have. He can jump higher, move faster, an increase in strength and defense, and it's a lot easier to be healed. All exspheres give their users different abilities depending on their specialty. Zelos, however, has no specialty. His Ex skills are more generic than the other members. Zelos and Kratos are both magic swordsman so they're able to use magic, fight with a weapon, and shield themselves with a shield as well.
Because Zelos is an angel, it is likely that his sight and hearing has increased due to the first step of angel transformation. It is never stated as to how far he actually goes through with it but he does have wings and that is the first step of the transformation, therefor, his sight and hearing enhanced as well. He's never had any lack of sleep, hunger, or touch like Colette has so he probably just never finished the transformation. He does have Angel artes like she does, only he only has two while she can have up to six.
Mental: This guy has learned, through a very tough life, to not give a shit. Zelos has gone through hell and back, seeing things that no person should ever see. To seeing his mother being murdered right in front of his eyes all the way into wanting to kill himself at the very end.
In contrast to how he appears, Zelos is actually a very intelligent person. His incredible, almost strange, math skills not only got him to be the highest of his class, but earn him to be Lloyd and Genis’ tutor toward the end of the series. Zelos attended the Imperial Research Academy in Tethe’alla, the flourishing out of the two worlds. Once the party went back to Sylvarant, they’re able to take the Palmacosta test in which Zelos gets a 300, having the 4th highest score overall. In addition, Zelos states that he hasn’t studied since he graduated, which is assumed approximately four years ago. This would mean that Zelos knows more than math, but definitely not by much. He’s smarter than he thinks he is.
Because of Lloyd, he’s grown to be a little more flexible with himself but even so, sometimes things never change.
Zelos is a great actor and he certainly knows how to put on one strong of a pokerface. He knows how to play along to get what he wants as well as manipulating others into believing what he says. Zelos knows how to put quite a show if he has an interior motive. His main goal was to have Yggdrassil take his title of Chosen off of him and bestow it on his younger sister Seles, who would have been a great Chosen. However, due to Zelos’ change of character, he changes his mind and helps the party. So, all in all, he lies to his friends, tells them the truth about him, lies to them again when he changes his mind, and lies to Yggdrassil when he decides to side with Lloyd. That takes one heck of an act, but with that smiling face who could resist?
Emotional: As stated earlier, Zelos hides his emotions pretty well if something’s bothering him but he counteracts that by doing something stupid or obnoxious. This is pretty much his normal face most of the time. He’s a loudmouth so it wouldn’t be rare for all of Luceti to hear Zelos mope and complain, or even when he’s in a good mood. That’s just how Zelos is. If he’s not in the mood, he shows the exact opposite.
Zelos is very good at reading people. He knows when to play his cards at certain times and when not to. For example, Zelos teases Sheena a lot and she’s not afraid to give him a piece of her mind, whether it be verbal or physical. He knows when to tease her and when to back off and leave her alone. He even tries to cheer her up after Corrine died but was only scolded for acting like an idiot at a serious time like that. When Lloyd would go over his head a lot, Zelos would be able to calm him down and snap him out of it.
Although Zelos isn't up for any kind of close relationship with anybody, he would make sure that trust never gets broken if he were to establish a bond. Zelos lived a hard life and, in his eyes, ruined others at the cost of his existence. If he could go back and change things, he would. But he can't. However, since Zelos is post game, he will try to do everything he can to make things better. The trust Lloyd puts in Zelos saved him for ending his own life so he will make sure that this bond will stay strong. He'll do anything in his path for Lloyd, as well as any other who can break those tough layers and get to Zelos' softer side.
Going back to that exsphere bit, it's very dangerous to have one without a keycrest, which is basically a mound that separates the user FROM the exsphere. If anything were to happen to the keycrest, whether it be damaging it or even removing it completely, Zelos will turn into a monster and eventually die. The keycrest is extremely important to all exsphere users.
"Not the face!"
Zelos is all about the looks and show. He loves his beautiful face a little too much for any person. He tries to block any blows aiming at his face and even says it in battle. Because of that, it's a big signal that says 'HIT MY FACE' so of course, people are gonna aim for it because it's a big weakness for him. He takes a few blows from Sheena a lot due to his unwanted moves on her.
"This takes concentration, you know."
Another weakness for Zelos during battle is his spell casting time. There are some people, like elves, who can cast a lot faster especially when equipped with an exsphere. Zelos, unfortunately, can't do that so his casting time tends to last a lot longer than any elf. This means he's an open target if he were to ever cast during any fight.
Mental: For someone who has a lot of issues, he’s easily annoyed with a lot of things so it doesn’t take a lot for him to be irritated with something.
The one thing Zelos has, and always will have trouble with, is trust. Zelos doesn’t give his trust to anybody. In fact, he would rather not have anything to do with it. From growing up in Meltokio, where every person is as shallow as a puddle on a rainy day, Zelos learned that any kind of trust between people is never good. He’s seen people at their ugliest state of character and hates every aspect of it. Not one person offered him kindness or even a helping hand after witnessing his mother’s bloody death at ten years old. Because of that, Zelos will always have an extremely hard time trusting people. Lloyd is the only person he ever put his trust into but they’ve come from a pretty long way.
Zelos is a very, very selfish person. He will not act on anything unless he gets something out of it. His attitude and common demeanor around people is the reason why he’s not the most likeable guy around the park, that’s exactly what he wants. If people don’t like him, they won’t care about him and they won’t get too close to him. Zelos doesn’t believe he is worth any kind of trust, no matter who’s giving it to him. He has to isolate himself in order to not get close with anyone. If someone tries to break through, he’ll back away. Unfortunately, he knows how much of a shitty person he is but he can’t get over that.
Emotional: Zelos will always hate winter. The slightest bit of snow will have him remember things he really won’t want to. White will turn to red in his eyes and will be instantly reminded of his mother and Seles. He sometimes hears her last words in his ears every once in awhile.
Zelos is a coward. He’s afraid of people trusting him that he’ll break their trust and ruin everything. Zelos never really made anyone’s life better by being in it. His mother told him that he shouldn’t have been born, ruined his sister’s life because she was put under house arrest right after her mother was execute for the murder of Zelos’ mother, and held all that guilt in for the rest of his life. The last thing he wants to do is to wreck someone else’s life for being the scum that he is.
Even though Zelos was able to establish a good, loyal friendship with Lloyd, doesn't mean it'll be easy for the next person. Those barriers that Zelos created have been there for quite awhile so it'll be pretty tough to break them down if someone would want to get close to him. It's quite a challenge. He'll try to push them away as much as he can. Zelos is more open and optimistic about the thought of trust but it still terrifies him and old habits die hard. It's like adopting a pet that's been abused it's whole life. You can give them all the love and attention they never had but the scars and memories will always be there.
